Roofing in Remuera: Slate, Clay Tile & Iron Roofs

- Hillside sections
Remuera stretches east from Newmarket along Remuera Road, climbing over the slopes of Mount Hobson and dropping toward Hobson Bay in the north and the Orakei Basin to the east. It is a leafy, established suburb of large homes, well-known schools and village shops. The roofs here are some of the most varied in Auckland, and many owners want a roofer who understands traditional materials rather than one who will simply recommend steel.
Homes in Remuera
Remuera developed from the late 1800s, with substantial villas and Edwardian houses on large sections, then grew through the 1920s and 30s with bungalows, English cottage-style homes and Spanish Mission designs. Postwar decades added brick-and-tile homes, and since then subdivisions, townhouses and large contemporary homes have filled in. Many older properties sit on generous, sloping, tree-filled sections, and plenty have been extensively renovated over the years.
The roofs we work on here
Alongside the usual corrugated iron, Remuera has many clay tile roofs, Marseille tiles on bungalows and Spanish Mission homes, and a number of natural slate roofs on older, grander houses. Slate and clay can last a very long time, but their fixings, battens, flashings and ridge bedding wear out first, and slipped or cracked pieces let water in. Hidden gutters, parapets and complex valleys are common on the larger houses. Our work covers like-for-like tile and slate repairs, flashing renewal, valley replacement and re-roofing iron on villas.
Weather and exposure
The northern and eastern slopes look toward the harbour and Orakei Basin and catch more breeze, though salt is not a big factor for most streets. Mature trees are a much greater concern: oaks, plane trees and natives drop huge amounts of leaf litter into valleys and spouting, and shaded slopes grow moss. Elevated homes near Mount Hobson can feel stronger gusts in storms.
